When Your Basset Hound Has an Accident: Cleaning Up Nothing can strain human and dog relationships quite the same way that urination can. That is if your Basset hound keeps urinating uncontrollably in the home, you will hardly welcome him into the bosom of the family with open and loving arms. In fact, the number one reason why dogs get left at shelters or end up tied up in the back yard is because they continued to urinate in the home. There are many reasons why your Basset Hound started urinating or continues to urinate in the home. In cases where a house broken dog reverts to going inside a medical condition could be to blame. Urination among male dogs could be as simple as marking territory. Your dog may be urinating simply because he has not been properly taught to go outside. Yes, I know; you tried everything, but in the end it wasnt enough. Somewhere the signals got crossed and your dog still thinks it is okay to hike up his leg in front of your grandmothers antique sofa. Once a dog begins going in the home, it can be difficult to stop the trend, especially in a dog like the Basset Hound who has great scenting abilities. You see, your dog likes to eliminate where he can smell prior eliminations. As you can imagine, once the smell gets into the carpet, it can be almost impossible to remove it. And even if you can not smell the urine, your Basset Hounds nose may be able to easily detect it even after all of your cleaning endeavors. With the scent firmly in place, all of your retraining and training attempts will likely go unappreciated by your Basset Hound. So, to be successful at stopping the in-house urination, you have to remove all of the scent and prevent your dog from going in the house again through the use of a training crate. There are a few cleaners on the market that successfully remove the scent from the carpet. Some may make the scent undetectable to human noses, but it still remains underneath the surface waiting for your hound to sniff it out. For this reason you need to use a cleaner that is specifically formulated to remove odor-causing urine enzymes from the carpet and flooring. You can find these at pet stores and some department stores. Never should you use products that contain ammonia. The ammonia in these cleaning products smells similar to urine and can actually draw your Basset Hound to eliminate on a certain spot. Flowery carpet fresheners and cleaners also only mask the smell and should be avoided. When medical causes are to blame, there are some medications that can help your Basset Hound hold it until he can get outside. But still, you have to be sure to remove all evidence of urination from the home so that your dog will not begin urinating inside despite getting help for his medical condition.
